Update

So one of our students has been selected by the British Council to be a 'climate champion'. The Limelight Awards were cancelled but are apparently to be rescheduled concerning the student-produced recycling video 'Heartbroken'. Action on Waste couldn't come in last week to do the Waste Audit because of the snow but we are rearranging for them to come in on the 27th February. I went to a seminar on Sustainable Schools organised by SEEd, of which more later.

International Climate Champions

Dear All
First of all, apologies for the slight delay in writing to you all. I have been very busy sorting out all sorts of issues in connection with an international event in Edinburgh involving Champions from 14 different countries which takes place in two weeks time.
Congratulations to you all (Champions and schools) for being selected as International Climate Champions. I have complete confidence in you having seen you all in action in the interview. You all have that secret ingredient of passion and determination which is an unbeatable combination in making a difference.
I will be sending you a certificate which you can put up at school in recognition of your role and I hope your school can make use of this story with local press and radio. We can help with this if you need it but I know many of your schools have good relationships with the local media and may be better placed to get sympathetic coverage. I will supply any additional information about the project that you may need and if there are any costs incurred in getting coverage I hope you will let me know.
You may remember that the Director ofGroundwork was involved in the interviewing process. Groundwork is our partner in this project and if you have not heard of their work I suggest you check out their website www.groundwork.org.uk. They have fifty trusts nationwide and can offer valuable help in developing your project ideas, putting you in touch with local organisations that may be able to help you and local businesses that might offer sponsorship. I will shortly be sending you contact details for the Groundwork Trust in your area.
One of the first steps in getting our projects up and running is to meet together for a day and a half’s training in project implementation and in getting your message across. Ideally this should be done this month but because of the International Edinburgh Event I cannot organise it this month. Would you all be able to come for the weekend of28/29 March? The British Council would pay all costs for you and a teacher or guardian and the aim of the workshop would be to get to know one another, discuss project ideas and plans and by the end have a clear sense of the way forward.
In the time in between, I suggest you get in touch with each other, share project ideas and plans and work on setting up a team in your school to help you. I know that is easier for some of you than others, but a team is always stronger than an individual and can get so much more done. If you don’t have a team in your school then let’s talk together as a group of Champions and teachers about what can be done in that situation.
I hope to have the chance to visit two or three of you in March before the workshop to discuss project ideas. There is a moderated website for Climate Change enthusiasts which allows for discussion with a wider group and you may like to check that out at www.footprintfriends.com. We will be putting together a platform for Champions globally to communicate with each other and at the moment are getting feedback from around the world on what sites and means people prefer. There is a short section in the attached form which I would like you to fill in and return to me which will tell us what works for you.
With your teacher’s consent, I would like to ask you to send me your email address and telephone number to share with the other England Champions so that you can start networking. Also could you let me have contact details (postal and email address if possible and telephone number) for your parents or guardians. I will be writing to them to give them some information about the British Council and its Climate Change work and what is involved in the work of Climate Champions.
This has been a long email and I hope you got to the end of it! I will be writing to you again soon (a shorter email next time!) I am really looking forward to working with you and together doing something really important for our world.
With best wishes for now

Mary
PS Please don’t forget to fill in the attached form. Many thanks.
