Display Energy Certificate

Display Energy Certificate. The school now has an 'A' rating.

But what does it all mean?

The Operational Rating is a numerical indicator of the actual annual carbon dioxide emissions from the building. This Rating is shown on a scale from A to G, where A is the lowest (best) and G is the highest (worst). Also shown are the Operational Ratings for the last two years; this provides information on whether the energy performance of the building is improving or not.

So according to this measurement Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate School has the lowest (best) rating for annual carbon dioxide emissions from the building.

'A' rating for energy usage

We have just learnt that we have been awarded 'A' grade for energy usage. This is part of the governments new legislation that every public buliding should have a certificate stating energy efficiency.

Display Energy Certificates

'Display Energy Certificates (DECs) show the actual energy usage of a building, the Operational Rating, and help the public see the energy efficiency of a building. This is based on the energy consumption of the building as recorded by gas, electricity and other meters. The DEC should be clearly displayed at all times and clearly visible to the public. A DEC is always accompanied by an Advisory Report that lists cost effective measures to improve the energy rating of the building.'

Social Networking and Web 2.0 to enable student participation in the sustainability journey

At the end of last term I set up a ning social network to enable the students to communicate with each other regarding sustainability issues at Bishop Challoner. I have recently made some really good contacts to help us realise this idea, one Dave Briggs of Dave Press who has given great advice on starting up a social network and contacts to a wealth of interesting information regarding social change and the living web (web 2.0). I intend to start an after school class this term following his advice and really give the students ownership of the project...or anything similar on any of the platforms that they might fancy (Bebo Myspace etc).

Ethical Fashion

Dear all,

The following students have volunteered to take part in a customise your old / own clothes session tomorrow during P1 to P4 with myself, Ms Leonida and the educator coordinator from Traid. They will also receive a talk on ethical issues in fashion and ways of overcoming this.

I hope this does not cause any inconvenience to your classes. They will be in lessons 6 and 7.

Many thanks,

Rhiannon Scutt

Taking place on Thursday 12th June. Pics to follow!

WWF Conference

Here are the details of the workshops we will be attending at the WWF Conference.

Valuing our future - leading sustainable schools
This workshop, run by NCSL, will discuss what sustainability means and consider ways in which schools can become more sustainable. It will share the findings of a research study conducted by WWF to explore what sustainability currently looks like in schools and consider the skills and characteristics of those who are leading this important agenda.
The workshop will also share the NCSL sustainability toolkit which aims to help schools audit their current position and provides ideas for action that will help schools to operate in a more sustainable way.

Giving pupils a voice

This workshop, run by practising teachers Nina Bernstein and Frances Thomson, will focus on how to unlock pupil voices in your school. It will explore ideas of how to make it happen, how to include all children, and the skills that children need to develop in order to participate. This highly participatory workshop will generate practical ideas that can be used in your school.

Inspired by our fragile planet
The workshop, being run by Marilyn Groves from the English Chamber Orchestra, will involve participating in music, drama and movement activities which can be used with children in the classroom to raise awareness and communicate the importance to others of caring for our fragile planet. Creative inspiration will be taken from the food we eat and the impact the choices we make can have on the other side of the world. Dividing into smaller groups, participants will create: a soundscape to evoke the journey of certain foods (including a banana) from source to plate, the countries through which the food might travel and the music it might ‘hear’ on its journey; a song, scat or chant to trace that journey from source to plate and on to disposal; an improvised scene taking place in a fruit market in the Caribbean or a supermarket in Brent Cross. Lots of creative thinking, no performing arts skills required and absolutely no pressure!

From my space to our space: It takes a whole village
Every action of every individual counts, but it’s the ‘multipliers’ that make the impact! This workshop, run by the Campaign for Learning provides a holistic approach to developing Sustainable Schools and offers creative and practical ideas to mobilise kids, staff, families and whole communities to reduce, reuse and recycle. There will be an opportunity to explore the ‘how to’ of getting every family involved, as well as examples of activities, including planning an Eco Story Safari, a Changing Spaces photographic project, making beautiful mosaics from recycled materials and running a ‘Don’t Feed Your Dustbin’ Family Feast day.

One Planet Schools 2008

One Planet Schools 2008 is a conference for teachers and other school staff who are active in the field of Learning for Sustainability or Sustainable Development Education – cultivating the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to build a society that is just, equitable and living within the environmental limits of our planet. We are hoping to be there on the thirteenth of June, networking and learning how to bring the dream of a sustainable school closer to reality.

Eco-Schools

We will be attending the Eco-Schools conference on the 23rd June in Aintree

This year's event is expected to attract around 1200 visitors including young people from Eco-Schools, supporters and other partners making it the biggest one ever. The conference programme has been written with a younger audience in mind and will feature speakers from some of the countries most impressive Eco-Schools, local authorities and national programmes. The Conference will also feature the official launch of the ASDAN Environmental Award, written by Eco-Schools the award has been accredited by the QCA as a GSCE grade B equivalent.

Of particular interest this year will be the Exhibition Hall with over 30 Exhibitors and the 'Ask the Experts' one to one sessions for Eco-Schools.

Bronze Award

Bishop Challoner Catholic Collegiate School in Shadwell in the East End of London has recently appointed a sustainability co-ordinator and is ready to begin its journey towards sustainability in earnest. The eco-committee is up and running, consisting of some especially motivated students in year 8 and 9. We are working towards a Bronze Award to get the ball rolling.
